English - SEXXXY Paragraph

Scene - 'They Don't Own Me

Theme - Rich vs Poor, Hope & Rebellion, Struggle for Power

What happened - Peeta & Katniss are having a conversation about how the games might affect them.

Brainstorm - Angles/Movement/Shots - Over the shoulder - shows speaker, puts us in Katniss POV, makes us part of the conversation.

Close-Ups - Shows the emotions of the two-nervous, anxious, mostly Peeta.

Lighting / Colour - mood - sad, gloomy - greys, darks, blacks, dim lighting - works with close-ups to highlight emotions on faces.

Atmosphere - Forboding, hesitant, nervous, reluctant.

In the scene ¨they don't own me¨ dialogue is used to create a foreboding atmosphere. Katniss and Peeta are having a conversation and how the upcoming games might affect them. This is demonstrated by the quote "I don't want them to change me", and "If I'm gonna die, I still wanna be me" spoken by Peeta. These show that Peeta has a sense that he is going to have to do things that he doesn't want to have to do like kill others. This male audience feels sorry for Peeta because he is likely going to die or kill others to stay alive. The director did this to make us believe Peeta will die early and that being a tribute isn't something to celebrate, but a loss of personal autonomy. This worked well with the dark colours of black and greys which add to the foreboding atmosphere. This aspect can be contrasted to when Peeta joins the career packs once in the games because they are cold-hearted killers which is what Peeta didn't want to be.

Hunger Game (music)

Tempo - Speed of the music - fast/slow/moderate

Dynamics - volume - how bad or quiet it is

Key - major - happy sound, minor - sad sound

Rues Death - How is music used to create atmosphere: depressing/sad/mournful, minor, tempo-slow, dynamics-quiet, gets louder as Katniss raises her salute + District 11 riots.

- what happened - Rue is killed, Katniss tries to give her body the closest to a burial that she can.

- colour/lighting - white flowers, natural lighting, greens stand out

Symbol - innocent + pure and- rue never killed anyone, kind, compassionate, victim
Shots / angles - medium close-ups - Rue + Katniss-see their emotions + facial expressions, anguish

                        - high angle - weak + vulnerable - Rue is an innocent + blameless victim

- Effect on viewers - atmosphere of remorse/ intense sadness, as the volume increase it builds the intensity of the emotions - we see emotions are contagious - hope.

Directors Purpose - feel Katniss's emotions at that moment - remorse, anger, helplessness, acceptance, rebellion - a symbol of 3 finger salute is a sign of defiance + anger towards the game makers - you will take my humanity, also a symbol of unification with those who have lost loved ones to the games.

Music is used to create an atmosphere of sorrow and remorse in Rue's death scene in this scene we see Katniss dealing with the slaughter of her young friend Rue. for example, the tempo is slow, the dynamics are quiet and the key is minor to reflect the emotional roller coaster that Katniss is feeling. Like the music, Katniss moves slowly and methodically to cover Rue's body in white flowers as she finishes, the music builds in volume, showing the increasing intensity of her anger and grief towards the Capitol. This makes us understand the pain experienced by the families of the tributes when they are killed each year. This was done to enable the viewer to feel the emotions of the characters. This worked well with the use of white flowers to symbolise Rue's innocence and purity and the high angle shot making her weak + vulnerable. Combined with the music we are shown that Rue is a victim of the cruelty of the Capitol.

Hitlers quotes

The Jews were responsible for bringing negroes into the Rhineland with the ultimate idea of bastardising (lowering the quality of) the white race they hated and thus lowering its cultural and political level so that the Jew might dominate.

Hitler is saying that the Jews are liable for all damages and wrongs in Germany and the Jews are trying to rid the world of pure germans.

“The Jewish youth lies in wait for hours on end...spying on the unsuspicious German girl he plans to seduce.....he wants to contaminate her blood and remove her from the bosom of her own people. The Jew hates the white race and wants to lower its cultural level so that the Jews might dominate.”

Hitler is saying that the jews would corrupt the Germans by having kids and relations with the pure Germans which would ruin the "Germans perfect race".

Starfish poem

Starfish Poem

The starfish poem has a deeper meaning as it means the even if your impact is small it is still important as it says in this text "there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it You can't possibly make a difference!" The young man listened politely. Then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said- It made a difference for that one. This evidence that Your effet does matter and can influence others to help out. if we all had the mindset as the Wiseman nothing would ever get done and we would let the situation get too bad to turn around and eventually will lead to death to that species.

Rust

a- water/ lots of rust

b- salt, water and air/ not much rust at all

c- water no oxygen

Rust Faster

Salt

Water

Oxygen

Rust Slower

Zinc

No Oxygen

Painted

rusting of iron requires water and oxygen. when either of these is removed no rusting will occurs. the rusting process is sped up when salt is also present. the easiest way to slow the rusting process is to ensure the iron does not come into contact with either oxygen or water

an iron nail will corrode if it comes into contact with the environment corrosion also occurs quicker if salt or water are present. corrosion of iron can be prevented by creating a barrier between the iron and the oxygen. this can be accomplished by coating the iron in plastic, grease or paint. Iron can also be coated in more reactive metals such as zinc, iron or steel nails coated in zinc are called galvanised.

children of blood and bone

I let go of her wrists, but inside I let go of so much more. Father’s tactics. His Orïsha. Everything I now realize I don’t want to be.

This was said by Inan while he was moments away from killing Zélie. Then he accidentally used his power and could see Zélie’s struggles and bad past. Before this moment, he believed that all maji were evil. When Inan saw Zelie’s past, he saw the struggles of the maji. He felt bad. Inan realized that they shouldn’t be treated differently.
I agreed with Inan that the royals shouldn’t fight with the maji. This is because they are also people.
This reminds me of Adolf Hitler and his hatred of the jews and how they are treated as the lowest class of race. This is like the book as the king is like Hitler and the Maji’s are the jews.

This book teaches us that everyone is an individual. This is because people can have their own opinions and are different from one another.  Like how Inan changed his mind after seeing how the maji were treated and how Zelie was treated. The world would be a better place if we all thought for ourselves and not put people into categories and stereotyping them.

Slavery

Explain the use of Spirituals and what they were -

Spirituals are music that slaves would sing to express emotion or for religious traditions.
Explain who Harriet Tubman and what the Underground Railroad was- Harriet Tubman was an ex-slave who leads around 300 slaves over 19 and used the Underground Railroad to escape. she also never lost a slave, after saving the slaves she joins the Union as a scout, and she cured dysentery.
Write about a spiritual you chose and highlight some lyrics and the hidden messages behind them- wade in the water was a spiritual that the slaves would sing in their bush meetings. their bush meetings were when their masters were in church and they weren't allowed in. so they meet up and would sing songs and pray. as the masters believed they were unholy. Wade in the water was a spiritual that had a secret meaning which was to swim in the water cause the master's dogs can't track them.
How are these events still significant today- Black lives matter is a protest against racism and racist cops
